The EuroBSDcon developer summit would not be possible without the generous support of sponsors.
EuroBSDcon provides logistical support, including organizing rooms for the event and for developers to stay in. EuroBSDcon also covers board and travel for all EuroBSDcon speakers. FreeBSD developers can help support the summit by speaking at EuroBSDcon! You can also help support EuroBSDcon and the developer summit by encouraging people to attend the conference, and especially to attend tutorials.
The FreeBSD Foundation covers travel expenses for several attendees. You can help support the FreeBSD Foundation by donating.
The deadline for submitting Travel Grant Requests is August 19.
Travel Information
Approaching Malta
A number of airlines serve Malta International Airport (MLA) with non-stop flights to many major destinations in Europe like Air Malta, Ryanair, Easyjet, Lufthansa, and Alitalia. Regular scheduled ferry services are also provided between Valetta, Malta and Pozallo (Sicily, Italy), Catania (Sicily, Italy), or Civitavecchia (near Rome, Italy).
Approaching the Event site
Bus route X2 (express route) from the Airport to San Ġiljan Ross (St. Julian's) departs every 30 minutes at .25 and .55 starting 05.55 to 22.55 (departure). The bus stop of St. Julian's is called San Ġiljan. The bus stop is in the upper part of St. Julian's and most hotels are only a few minutes walk away. A bus day-pass costs EUR 2.60 (while a 7-day pass costs EUR 12.00) and can be bought from the Arriva Counter or Ticket Machine.
Shuttle service from and to the airport is available from Maltatransfer and costs about EUR 8 one way and EUR 16 both ways, it should be booked online in advance. But it can also be booked at the transfer desk in the terminal. Note that the ride time is usually longer due to multiple destinations in the same area being served.
White Taxi service is available from the Airport to any destination in Malta. Fixed rates apply and pre-paid tickets can be purchased from the ticket booth inside the Welcomers' Hall on Arrivals. The fixed taxi fair from the airport to St. Julian's is EUR 20 one-way.
Visas
Malta is member of the EU Schengen Area and has abolished passport and immigration control with all other Schengen members which includes the majority of the EU countries plus Norway, Switzerland and Iceland. Visa-free entrance is granted to all other EU member citizen and many other countries, including the USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Argentine, Chile, and others for stays up to 90 days. However, some attendees may need to apply for a Visa, please check before traveling. If you need a formal invitation letter (never hurts), let <<(MailTo(devsummit AT FreeBSD DOT org)>> know.

IRC
Note that many of attendees of the summit hang out on #devsummit on EFnet during the event (as well as the conference itself). Feel free to join!
Schedule
The developer summit spans three days, with a mixture of hacking, group meetings, and presentations. The first part takes place on September 26—27 on the same days as the EuroBSDcon tutorials, while the second part on September 28 runs in parallel with the main conference.
However, many developers will probably arrive by the night of the 25th and meet for dinner and drinks before things start. Most developers will stay on through EuroBSDcon to give and attend talks. It is an excellent conference — a good FreeBSD developer showing has countless benefits, not least the opportunity to tell the world what we are doing! And this occasion, an excellent side program is offered for your family, spouse, or significant other. In addition, Malta is famous for its rich history and many excellent scuba diving sites.
Rough Schedule
The current general plan is as follows. Note that this is a just rough schedule, please find the exact one further below.

Hacking Groups
These sessions are intended to get developers with common areas of interest or specific projects in mind together for collaboration and hacking. They might involve prepared presentations, structured code reading, or a notebook-assisted whiteboard session. Advance preparation for such events is critical so everyone comes to the table with the right reading done so you can get to the meat of the matter.
Submit your proposals to <devsummit AT FreeBSD DOT org> which shall include an abstract and number of slots needed. (1 slot = 90 minutes) It also expected to do a brief presentation on the results in the Developer Summit Track on Saturday and send a write-up to <hackers AT FreeBSD DOT org>.
Submission is open, accepted proposals are added continuously.
Thank you for the submissions, we are full now — and looking forward to an excellent summit :-)

The LLDB Debugger in FreeBSD |
Ed Maste |
LLDB, part of the LLVM family of projects, is a modern, high-performance source-level debugger. This talk will present a brief history of LLDB, an update on the current status of the port to FreeBSD, and directions for future work. |
|
Multipath TCP for FreeBSD: Status Update |
Lawrence Stewart |
Multipath TCP (MPTCP) transparently retrofits multi-pathing capabilities to regular TCP and is a work in progress within the IETF. An implementation for FreeBSD has been progressing at Swinburne University of Technology's Centre for Advanced Internet Architectures. I'll provide a summary of the protocol, implementation architecture and update on the project's progress. |
|
A FreeBSD-based network simulation environment based on NS3 and NSC |
Lawrence Stewart |
As part of my PhD work, I ported the FreeBSD 9-STABLE and 10-CURRENT network stacks to run in user space as part of the Network Simulation Cradle (NSC) environment. When coupled with a discrete event network simulator like Network Simulator 3 (NS3), arbitrary network topologies can be created with nodes running real FreeBSD network stack code, and experiments can be run at faster than real-time. I'll provide an overview of the architecture, recently released VM simulation environment and some possible uses. |
|
Improving FreeBSD Packet Forwarding |
Alexander Chernikov |
An effort to summarize some of FreeBSD packet forwarding problems and propose some changes to eliminate them. |
|
Mirage/kFreeBSD |
Gabor Pali |
Status update on the completion of the FreeBSD kernel port of the Mirage unikernel. As it is implemented in OCaml, a contemporary functional programming language, this presentation also gives an experience report on how languages other than C can be employed within the kernel. |
Notes
If you are in trouble with preparing your slides, you could use the template attached to the page. It contains a LaTeX source file that you can modify to create PDF slides for the FreeBSD Developer Summit. It uses the Beamer class which is an easy-to-use extension to LaTeX for making presentations. You can easily install it by the following command (as root):
# pkg_add -r latex-beamer
or, with pkg:
# pkg install latex-beamer
This will install Beamer and pdfLaTeX that can be used for compiling the sources to produce the desired PDF file.
$ pdflatex my-presentation.latex
Or you can use the LibreOffice / OpenOffice template (contributed by BaptisteDaroussin).
A few rule-of-thumbs when creating slides:
- Try to make things legible, use large fonts.
- Have title and closing.
- Use less text, you do not have to include everything on the slides. (Prepare and) Do a demonstration if needed.
- You have only a limited amount of time, having only 1 slide per minute (in addition to title and closing) is usually fine.
- Sometimes images can tell more than pure text.
- Discussions and meetings are the place where you might want to talk about the details.
Contact <devsummit AT FreeBSD DOT org> if you have questions or problems.
Registration
In order to attend, you must register in advance; this allows us to size rooms, order food, provide beverages, and make dinner reservations. We appreciate your cooperation in letting us know your plans well in advance of the event. Non-committers must be sponsored by a committer in order to attend.
REGISTRATION IS OPEN. CLOSING DATE: SEPTEMBER 23.
REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED.
A registration fee is charged for all attendees in order to cover the costs of the summit (rooms, wireless internet access, snacks, drinks, lunch, use of A/V equipment, badge, shirt). This fee is EUR 30 per day. Note that this fee does not include either the tutorials or the dinners (see below) so they have to be paid separately.
The fee can be paid through the conference site where the summit is listed. (If you do not find it in the list contact us.) Do not set your registration status yourself, we will do that once your registration has been confirmed.
Here is a list of the attendees and their guests at the summit.

Further Useful Information
Power Plugs
Mind that Malta has 230V AC mains using the bulky British three-prong standard plugs.
Catering
Lunches will be served as sandwiches during the day at the venue. Some snacks and soft drinks will be available during the sessions as well.
Dinners
Dinners are paid extra to the summit fee, all the places are booked in advance. Note that this year you can select and pay your dinner in advance through the EuroBSDcon registration system. This is also the preferred method, hence late dinner registrations are not really recommended.

- September 26 (Thursday), from 19:00. The Black Pearl, Ta' Xbiex Marina, Ta' Xbiex.

Each of the dinners costs around EUR 27. See the EuroBSDcon registration form for the exact prices.
