Desktop Installer

You must complete all the prerequisites in the Prerequisites page before proceeding.

desktop-installer will give you everything you could possibly want at the cost of some up-front patience while it assembles everything for you. As of this writing dekstop-installer does *not* distinguish between drm-kmod and drm-legacy-kmod so you may need to do some tinkering.

I used it to install Gnome, KDE, Mate and Xcfe4. Each greeted me with a working environment. When prompted, I suggest using the xf86-video-intel or xf86-video-ati option as a safe bet. You can then follow the Acceleration instructions to get accelerated GPU graphics.

Be forewarned that one of the first things this tool does is download the entire ports tree. If you plan to stick with quarterly updates, this process can take a long while. If you opt for daily updates - the operation is much faster. Most likely you are installing pre-built packages but a few ports aren't offered in binary form because their license does not allow it. It is important that your ports tree and pkg are in sync.

# pw groupmod video -m ordinary
# pw groupmod wheel -m ordinary
# pkg install desktop-installer
# dekstop-installer

Follow the prompts. Be sure to answer "no" when asked to update the system (you did that in the Prerequisites section above).

Expect long delays between the 15 plus questions. When asked to reboot, run desktop-installer again to resume the process. It will start from the beginning but it does remember your choices.

You can also install Lumina from desktop-installer. This is a good route if you want some extra bells and whistles like a login manager.
