MoinMoin
MoinMoin Itself
MoinMoin is a "fairly mature" software package.
Our installed release is the latest release, 1.9.11.
The FreeBSD port is marked deprecated due to its reliance on the obsolete python 2.7.
We can either keep python 2.7 in the tree, or freeze the MoinMoin jail as it is and delete 2.7.
The next MoinMoin release has been announced to be 2.0. See the RoadMap.
- However, note that no release date is scheduled.
There will be a possibly nontrivial effort to convert our contents to the new codebase. MoinMoin's own development documentation is unclear on this, except for the fact that 2.0 is an extensive rewrite.
Alternatives To MoinMoin
If we decide to migrate the content to another wiki package, the cost would be quite high. Apparently the markup that MoinMoin uses is ... interesting.
At one time, EitanAdler had looked into this. At that time, I (MarkLinimon) discouraged it, because while the cost was high, the benefit was unclear.
But as of 2023, it seems we will now have to pay the cost anyway.
Comparison Chart From wikimatrix.org
https://www.wikimatrix.org maintains a feature comparison:
- Most wiki software has not had releases in the past several years. These sound like the same trap we are already in.
- Of course, closed-source software will not be considered as a FreeBSD key technology.
Here is their Feature Comparison of what seems to be the most popular open-source wiki implementations. Things to note:
The GitHub ratings show that BookStack has 10374 stars, TiddlyWiki has 7039 stars(Good for personal notebook but not for a community wiki), and DocuWiki has 3582 stars. These numbers may be suggestive.
The above chart has comparisons of what markup is used. Note that BookStack is WSYIWG.
- Better to avoid anything with a RDB backend
MediaWiki
Migration to MediaWiki could be done, but it sounds painful.
MediaWiki's MoinMoin to MediaWiki article contains the following scary note:
There are a number of hacky scripts for this. They are all defective in various ways - anyone who does this job does it precisely once.
The w3.org Moinmoin to Mediawiki migration Manual does not sound cheerful, either.
DokuWiki
- Has been in the arena for ages
- Well maintained
- Flat File System
- Huge collection of plugins
- Comes with LDAP Auth support by default
- Easy to manage
- Easy to add Themes
Some notes has been added here.
