Installation
In order to boot the installation media it is required to turn on Safe Mode. Otherwise it hangs on run_interrupt_driven_hooks still waiting after 60 seconds for xpt_config (see this post on Super User for more details).
On FreeBSD 11 and higher it is necessary to set hw.vga.textmode in the boot loader(8).
Tested with:
- FreeBSD 11.1-RELEASE i386 disc1
- FreeBSD 10.3-RELEASE i386 dvd1
Post-installation tweaks
After installation it is necessary to drop into shell before rebooting and add the following hints to /boot/device.hints:
hint.ata.0.disabled="1" hint.ata.1.disabled="1"
On FreeBSD 11 and higher it is a good idea to add the following line to /boot/loader.conf:
hw.vga.textmode=1
