FreeBSD Developer Summit: Google Summer of Code and Outreachy Working Group
May 16, 2019 (Thursday), 15:30-17:00
DMS 1130
Overview
Google Summer of Code (GSoC) and Outreachy are both programs designed to match students with mentors from open source, technology-related organizations to work on projects writing code and getting paid to do it. The FreeBSD Project has participated in GSoC since 2005. The purpose of this working group is discuss methods to streamline the process for determining GSoC project ideas and increase participation from members of the FreeBSD community to serve as mentors. We’ll also discuss whether participation in the Outreachy program is feasible.
It may be possible to bring in people who cannot attend in person via video conference or chat tools. Notes during the session will be published later on for the whole community to see what we discussed.
Goals
- Determine what’s working and what’s not working in the current GSoC
- Determine next steps to improve the GSoC process
- Determine the feasibility of participating in Outreachy this fall.
Time permitting we may also discuss the Project's interest in participating in Google Summer of Docs and Google Code-In.
